Explain why Fortnite can be capped by display refresh rate and how to check the current V-Sync and frame-rate settings.
- Symptoms
- FPS cap seems locked

- V-Sync and display refresh rate
- Caution
- Higher caps do not guarantee smoother play
Check the actual limit and where it occurs
In a repeatable gameplay scene, compare the reported FPS with the monitor refresh rate and the limit you selected. Fortnite can apply different behavior in lobby screens versus a live match.
If FPS fluctuates below a target, you may have a performance limitation rather than a deliberate FPS cap.
Understand V-Sync
Epic documents that V-Sync can match the game frame rate to the display refresh frequency to reduce visible tearing. Check whether this feature is on, then decide whether the trade-off fits your needs.
Disabling V-Sync may allow different rates but can introduce tearing or different frame pacing. Save your original setting before testing.
Set the frame-rate limit in video settings
Open Fortnite’s current video/display settings, review the Frame Rate Limit option, and apply the setting appropriate for your device. Epic notes that the lobby can impose a cap independent of some in-match settings.
Do not assume that selecting a high number forces your GPU to deliver that many rendered frames. Hardware, thermals and background workload still matter.
Validate with the same scene
After one setting change, restart if prompted and check a comparable gameplay environment. If stutters or tearing get worse, revert your change rather than stacking speculative fixes.
