Convert Overworld and Nether X/Z coordinates, plan portal travel and understand why portal linking needs more than dividing by eight.
Understand the 8:1 travel ratio
For horizontal travel, one block in the Nether represents about eight blocks in the Overworld. Divide Overworld X and Z by eight to estimate a corresponding Nether position, or multiply Nether X and Z by eight for the reverse direction.
The vertical Y coordinate is not converted with the horizontal 8:1 ratio. A portal may link to a nearby available portal rather than an exact theoretical coordinate. Use the calculator in Volpedia Tools for the arithmetic.
Plan a portal route safely
Write down the X and Z coordinates of both intended destinations. Pick a safe building location with solid ground, secure access and enough room to approach the portal.
A coordinate match is a navigation aid, not a promise about exact portal generation. Check the local terrain, existing portals and the edition you are playing before permanently connecting a travel network.
Worked coordinate example
An Overworld position of X 800, Z -240 corresponds to an estimated Nether target of X 100, Z -30. The sign of each coordinate matters: negative Z stays negative when you divide.
For the reverse calculation, Nether X -50 and Z 125 correspond to Overworld X -400 and Z 1000. Keep a written list of destinations so you do not confuse your base and return portal.
