Is Minecraft
cross-platform?

Bedrock plays with Bedrock across supported devices. Java and Bedrock do not natively share multiplayer worlds.

Supported platform families

Platforms shown here are those included in this independently researched comparison, not an exhaustive list of every supported game edition.

Important crossplay limits

  • The key distinction is edition, not the name of the device. Java and Bedrock use different multiplayer ecosystems.
  • For Bedrock cross-play, use compatible editions and the account/network options supported by each device.
  • Java players can join other Java players. A vanilla Java client cannot join a normal Bedrock Realm or Bedrock server.

Special requirements

Worlds and Realms are edition-specific; owning both editions does not merge worlds or let Java and Bedrock connect to the same standard server.

How to play with friends

  1. Ask your friend to confirm Java or Bedrock in the game menu.
  2. If editions differ, launch the matching edition where licensed or choose a different multiplayer arrangement.
  3. Check console online-service requirements, privacy controls and Realm invitation settings.
