How it works
Learn the four distinct reactive defenses without guessing inputs.
Practical strategy
Follow the chapters in order, practise each system in a safe encounter, and revisit your Pictos, weapon scaling and AP flow when a step stops working.
Mistakes to avoid
Treating every build or boss sequence as identical across all save files and patches leads to avoidable mistakes.
Parry, dodge, jump and counter timing: walkthrough
Read a windup
Watch the enemy’s body and the actual moment a strike connects. Some attacks have intentionally delayed timing. Do not use the start of the animation as your universal cue; observe two repetitions if necessary.
Dodge unknown patterns
Dodge is usually the sensible first response for an unfamiliar multi-hit pattern. Survive a full attack once, then attempt a more aggressive defense on the hit you understand best. Learning has more value than a risky counter during a first attempt.
Use parries deliberately
A successful parry on the relevant attacks can produce an excellent counter window and improve resource flow through suitable effects. But multi-hit patterns require multiple correctly timed inputs; practice them one sequence at a time.
Recognize exceptional cues
Some attacks call for jumping and some Gradient Attacks call for a dedicated Gradient Counter. These should be treated as separate visual cues, not ordinary attacks with different damage numbers.
Turn defense into offense
After surviving consistently, coordinate your counter damage with AP, Break and party setup. A clean defense can save the healing turn you would otherwise spend repairing an avoidable mistake.
