Compare repair methods, enchantment preservation and experience costs before you risk a valuable Minecraft tool.
The main difference is what happens to enchantments
An anvil can repair or combine equipment while retaining compatible enchantments. It can also apply enchanted books. That makes it the safer option when a tool has upgrades you want to protect. In contrast, a grindstone removes most non-curse enchantments and can return some experience. It is better for cleaning unwanted enchanted equipment than for preserving a favorite pickaxe.
Combining matching items in a crafting grid also repairs durability, but it does not preserve their enchantments. Check the output slot before committing: once you complete a recipe, the original items are consumed. The different methods solve different problems rather than forming a single universal upgrade path.
Why anvil costs rise over time
Anvil operations spend experience levels. Repeated work on the same equipment can accumulate a prior-work penalty, so making many small changes may become more costly than planning a finished item. The cost also depends on enchantments and the items being combined. Do not assume that two visually identical enchanted tools will produce the same bill.
If you are preparing a valuable item, lay out the intended book combinations before spending levels. The game preview shows the actual cost for the current edition and items; that preview matters more than an old video about anvil order.
A safe decision before pressing the output slot
Use an anvil when keeping an enchantment is essential. Consider the grindstone when the existing enchantments are disposable and you want a clean item. Use crafting-grid repair only when you knowingly accept losing the enchantment effects. For ordinary low-value tools, crafting a fresh replacement can be simpler.
If the anvil says an operation is too expensive, do not keep feeding unrelated books into the same item. Review which upgrades matter most or obtain a fresh base item. Mechanics and limits differ across editions and versions, so check the linked references before committing rare materials.
