How it works
Pact conditions add Heat after major progression. Each weapon tracks its own bounty opportunities at relevant difficulty thresholds, so a repeated low-Heat clear does not provide endless rare resources.
Practical strategy
Record the room or boss where the build failed and the cause. Remove one punishing modifier or change the weapon before attempting another large Heat jump. Controlled experiments teach more than blind escalation.
Common mistake to avoid
Do not treat one particular boon or drop as guaranteed; adapt the guide to the run you receive.
Heat and Pact of Punishment Guide
Understand Heat and bounties
Pact conditions add Heat after major progression. Each weapon tracks its own bounty opportunities at relevant difficulty thresholds, so a repeated low-Heat clear does not provide endless rare resources. Practical check: before the next escape, identify the one action or resource that will make this step easier. The best guide is one you can test room by room, rather than a fixed sequence that depends on random rewards.
Start with readable modifiers
Choose one condition at a time. A moderate shop penalty can demand different decisions than faster enemy attacks; the value of a modifier is how well you can adapt to its actual effect. In a real run, watch for the exact moment when this plan stops being comfortable: an enemy projectile, an unfavorable chamber reward or a poor health total. That point tells you whether to change positioning or build direction.
Watch interacting conditions
Forced Overtime plus Hard Labor shortens response time and makes mistakes costlier. Middle Management and Extreme Measures alter specific encounters. Consider each interaction, not just the number shown. Try this deliberately on your next attempt, without also changing weapon and Mirror setup at the same time. Keeping other variables stable makes the result easier to judge and helps you learn what worked.
Adapt the build to pressure
Timed runs reward stable damage and decisive routing, whereas reduced healing rewards mitigation and efficient health usage. Different Heat configurations justify different Keepsakes and Mirror choices. If the encounter becomes risky, first preserve an open path to safety. There is rarely a reason to sacrifice an entire Death Defiance just to complete one more attack animation during a dangerous telegraph.
Review a failed Heat run
Record the room or boss where the build failed and the cause. Remove one punishing modifier or change the weapon before attempting another large Heat jump. Controlled experiments teach more than blind escalation. Before leaving the region, ask whether you gained combat consistency, permanent resources or useful narrative progress. Any of those makes the next run stronger, even when this particular escape does not succeed.
