Diagnose portals that return to an unexpected location using horizontal coordinates, nearby portals and safe travel checks.
Coordinate conversion is only the first step
Nether travel uses an approximate eight-to-one relationship for X and Z coordinates between dimensions. Divide Overworld X and Z by eight to estimate the intended Nether endpoint; Y is not divided in the same way. That gives you a target, but it does not guarantee a portal will appear exactly on that block.
Portal searching and linking consider available portals and valid placement conditions. Nearby existing portals can capture a new connection, especially when several destinations are close together. This is why dividing two numbers correctly can still produce an unexpected return journey.
Check both directions before rebuilding everything
Record the Overworld portal position and the Nether portal position. Travel through, note the actual arrival coordinates, then return and record where the game sends you. If the route is asymmetric, another portal may be nearer to one of the calculated targets or the game may have had to choose a different placement.
Inspect the surrounding area before breaking an old portal, particularly on multiplayer worlds. Destroying a shared connection can strand other players or send them into dangerous terrain. Keep a safe route and a copy of your coordinates while troubleshooting.
Make changes deliberately and test once
Calculate the intended target for each horizontal axis, scout a viable safe platform, and only then decide whether a portal should be moved or built. Confirm that nearby existing portals are understood. Re-test in both directions and check the resulting coordinates rather than assuming one successful arrival proves the link is stable.
Edition-specific portal mechanics and game updates can alter edge cases. Use the Nether portal reference for precise search behavior and construction constraints; this checklist intentionally avoids promising a universal distance threshold that applies in every configuration.
