Use the classic 18-type framework as a starting point while accounting for Z-A’s move timing, attack reach and type-changing Mega Evolutions.

01 / 03

Start with ordinary strengths and weaknesses

Pokémon games use 18 elemental types, and many Pokémon have one or two types. A move can be especially effective, resisted or ineffective against the defending type or combination. A dual type is evaluated across both types rather than by choosing only the most favorable one.

As a simple example, an Electric attack cannot normally hit a Ground type on the standard modern chart. Exceptions can arise from special mechanics, effects and ability interactions; check the game’s actual battle state before treating any number as universal.

02 / 03

Adapt the chart to real-time decisions

The type chart describes effectiveness, not whether a move will land. Pokémon Legends: Z-A introduces attack reach, activation timing and areas of effect, so the best theoretical type matchup may not be the safest move at the present position.

Keep one decision about potential effectiveness and another about execution. If a target is moving, watch where it is and how long your chosen move takes to take effect, rather than repeatedly selecting the highest nominal multiplier.

03 / 03

Check the Mega form rather than the original

The developer notes that some Mega Evolutions change a Pokémon’s type. Recheck the matchup after a transformation instead of assuming the original form keeps the same weaknesses.

Volpedia’s dedicated modern Pokémon type chart provides an independent quick comparison of ordinary single and dual types. It does not simulate Z-A-specific move timing, special abilities or effects and should not be treated as a real-time battle predictor.

  1. 01Identify the defending form and its present type or types.
  2. 02Check the move’s attacking type against every defending type.
  3. 03Account for distance, timing and field effects before committing.
