How it works
Five-part, original Volpedia guide to all twelve patch 8 subclasses, explaining the actual Baldur’s Gate 3 mechanics, common decision points and ways to avoid unnecessary mistakes.
Practical strategy
Follow the chapters in order, then open the related entries when a game rule or location is unfamiliar.
Mistakes to avoid
Do not confuse a suggested route with the only valid story outcome. Check quest warnings before irreversible decisions.
All Twelve Patch 8 Subclasses: walkthrough
Check Patch 8 availability
Patch 8 introduced exactly one subclass for each of the twelve core classes. It was the last major content patch announced by Larian. Confirm that the update is installed before following an older character planner, because early BG3 guides do not include these subclasses.
Martial specializations
The martial additions are Path of the Giant Barbarian, Arcane Archer Fighter, Drunken Master Monk, Swashbuckler Rogue and Swarmkeeper Ranger. They shift combat roles toward thrown attacks, magical archery, evasive melee, dueling and swarm-assisted control.
Divine and nature specializations
Divine and nature specialists gained Death Domain Cleric, Circle of Stars Druid and Oath of the Crown Paladin. These offer different ways to emphasize offense, celestial utility or ally protection while retaining the familiar class resource and spell rules.
Arcane and occult specializations
Arcane and support choices include College of Glamour Bard, Shadow Magic Sorcerer, Hexblade Warlock and Bladesinging Wizard. Consider whether your party needs charm and support, shadow-oriented spells, weapon-themed casting or a mobile wizard before choosing.
How to respec without losing quest progress
Use Withers at camp to respec existing companions rather than starting a new campaign only to try a subclass. Remember that changing class levels does not reset companion story outcomes, and individual features should be checked in the current in-game tooltips.
