Overview

Learn the two upgrade tracks and the role of Ashes of War.

02

How it works

This guide breaks the topic into the concrete decisions that matter in an actual playthrough, separating progression requirements from optional improvements.

03

How to approach it

Follow the stages in order, then use the linked character, region, boss and equipment references when you need more detail.

04

Common mistakes

Do not assume optional steps are mandatory or that all encounters remain unchanged after major story progression.

ORIGINAL VOLPEDIA WALKTHROUGH

Weapon upgrades: standard and Somber explained: step by step

01

Pick the weapon family

Most ordinary armaments use numbered Smithing Stones and more reinforcement stages; many unique armaments use Somber stones and fewer stages. The materials are not interchangeable.

02

Use smithing stations

Early upgrades can begin at accessible smithing locations, with broader reinforcement services later through the Roundtable Hold smith. Upgrade stones improve the weapon itself while attribute investment controls scaling.

03

Ash of War decisions

For compatible weapons, Ashes of War can change skills and potentially affinities. Unique weapons with fixed skills often cannot accept these replacements; check before planning a build around an incompatible skill.

04

Plan upgrade resources

Explore mines and collect useful Bell Bearings to unlock purchasing paths. Prioritize one dependable armament, then fund experiments once materials are easier to obtain.
