How it works
Create reusable production designs that remain understandable and easy to debug. Each stage in the walkthrough below has a distinct practical objective; complete the current supply or control loop before expanding it.
Practical advice
Build and test one assembler or smelting block under load. Only blueprint it after inputs, outputs and power have been proven.
Mistakes to avoid
Never assume an unrelated blueprint or another version of Factorio has identical recipes, technology unlocks or machine ratios. Use the checkpoints in this guide to diagnose your own save.
Blueprints and modular expansion: complete walkthrough
Finish a working module first
Build and test one assembler or smelting block under load. Only blueprint it after inputs, outputs and power have been proven.
Mark module interfaces
Reserve locations for belts, fluid pipes, pole connections and robot coverage. A clearly labeled interface is more valuable than a compact pattern with invisible assumptions.
Use construction ghosts
Place a blueprint as ghosts for inspection, then supply construction bots and materials if you want automated building.
Plan upgrades and removal
The upgrade planner can help replace appropriate machines while the deconstruction planner cleans obsolete parts. Preview changes around live rail and fluid systems.
Document compatibility
Label blueprints with base game/Space Age, relevant version and mod prerequisites. Old blueprints can be useful but should never be presumed universally compatible.
