In short: Destroy or disable healing crystals, carry a bow, slow falling or water as appropriate and strike safely during landing opportunities.
What is Ender Dragon?
The main boss of the End and a milestone in many survival playthroughs.
How it works
End crystals on obsidian towers heal the dragon. During the fight, the dragon circles, attacks and periodically lands at the central portal.
How to approach it
Destroy or disable healing crystals, carry a bow, slow falling or water as appropriate and strike safely during landing opportunities.
Common mistake to avoid
Do not stare at endermen or bridge carelessly around the island edges mid-fight.

Why the crystals matter
The Ender Dragon is not a simple health bar race. End crystals positioned on the obsidian towers restore its health, so damaging the dragon before addressing its healing can waste resources and time. Identify which towers are accessible from safe ground. A bow gives you options at range, while caged crystals may require careful climbing or a different angle. Remain aware of endermen while looking upward.
Positioning during the fight
Choose routes with room to move rather than standing on the central edge while the dragon circles. Dragon attacks, knockback and falls can become more dangerous than a normal melee hit. When it perches near the exit portal, use the opportunity deliberately and avoid attacking from a risky angle. Save your best healing resources for mistakes that threaten your survival rather than for small incidental damage.
Preparation and recovery
Repair gear beforehand, bring ranged ammunition and a way to manage falls. If you lose equipment, rushing back unprepared is likely to cost more. A bed set safely in the Overworld helps with recovery but does not remove hazards from the End itself. Think through the return trip and inventory space before deciding to continue into outer islands after the boss.
