Overview
Coordinate minions, sentries and whips with the 1.4.5-era balance.
How it works
Summoner has an active playstyle: whips mark or focus targets and minions continue damage as you dodge. Whip effects and their interactions have changed in 2026 updates.
How to use it
Select minions that can actually reach your boss, then use a whip and gear with compatible benefits.
Mistakes to avoid
Do not assume an old guide accounts for the 1.4.5.7 whip stacking changes.
Summoner Whips and Minions: detailed guide
Active summoner positioning
Minions often follow targets autonomously, but aiming them at a specific threat improves results. Whips provide direct damage and can mark targets, so avoid swinging at harmless adds when you want the boss focused. A movement accessory remains essential because summoner armor can be fragile.
Pre-Hardmode plan
Look for available early staves such as Finch or Imp and whips such as Leather Whip or Snapthorn. You do not need to farm a rare Slime Staff to start the class. Use the Jungle and Underworld as progression checkpoints once you can survive exploration.
Hardmode synergy
Spider and Sanguine summons differ in behavior, so test them in a controlled arena. Firecracker and Durendal create different whip interactions, and the strongest combination is not universal. Revisit gear after mechanical bosses and adjust whether you want sustained damage or reliable targeting.
Changes in 1.4.5
Bigger and Boulder added multiple whips, and later hotfixes rebalanced some effects and restored whip stacking behavior. Avoid presenting a frozen pre-2026 tier list as current. If a tactic relies on a precise weapon effect, check the equipment tooltip in the running game version and prefer explanatory advice over hardcoded damage numbers.
