Overview
Navigate surface, underground and DLC regions efficiently.
How it works
This guide breaks the topic into the concrete decisions that matter in an actual playthrough, separating progression requirements from optional improvements.
How to approach it
Follow the stages in order, then use the linked character, region, boss and equipment references when you need more detail.
Common mistakes
Do not assume optional steps are mandatory or that all encounters remain unchanged after major story progression.
Exploration guide: map fragments, markers and secrets: step by step
Map fragments
Roadside pillars often mark map fragment locations. Revealing terrain makes it easier to identify landmarks, but does not automatically reveal every cave or entrance.
Elevation matters
Elden Ring uses high cliffs, underground layers and separate regions; a location may be visible directly above you but accessible through a distant tunnel or lift.
Regional loops
Follow a loop from a grace to a known objective, open shortcuts, collect useful upgrades and return. The map need not be cleared in a single trip.
Shadow Realm navigation
DLC areas have especially interwoven vertical approaches. Mark cave exits, springs and alternate routes instead of trusting flat map proximity.
