Overview
How real-time Pokémon combat works and how to make every move count.
How it works
In Z-A you and your Pokémon move around the battlefield while moves resolve in real time. Different moves have different ranges, areas of effect and cooldowns. Your positioning affects whether a move connects, even if its type matchup is excellent.
How to play
Read the enemy attack animation before committing to a move. Keep enough distance to see an incoming area attack, then move or dodge to a safe spot. Use fast and reliable moves to maintain pressure; reserve slow or narrow attacks for clear openings.
Mistakes to avoid
Do not chase damage numbers while standing in telegraphed danger. A missed powerful move is often worth less than repeated safe hits.

Reading telegraphs
Many dangerous attacks signal an impact area or charging animation. Learn to recognize the beginning of an attack and the moment when movement is safest. Space is a resource in real-time combat.
Range and timing
A line attack, close-range strike and area move each have different strengths. Try a move in a safe encounter before building a tactic around it. Cooldowns make move choice a timing decision, not simply a choice of raw power.
Safe switching
Switching Pokémon should answer a concrete problem such as a bad matchup or an opponent moving outside your useful range. Plan the transition around incoming attacks.
Training routine
Pick one familiar enemy and practice dodging without attacking. Then repeat while using only one attack type. Finally add two different cooldowns to learn how they overlap.
