Understand how destroying Demon or Crimson Altars creates early Hardmode ore tiers, why your world may have alternate ore names, and how to troubleshoot mining after defeating Wall of Flesh.

01 / 04

Confirm Hardmode and the correct hammer

Defeating the Wall of Flesh activates Hardmode in the world. You can then break Demon or Crimson Altars with a sufficiently powerful hammer, commonly the Pwnhammer. Before this transition, simply reaching an altar or using a weaker hammer will not trigger the same ore-generation process.

New enemy threats make the first Hardmode mining trips more dangerous. Prepare storage, mobility, healing and a route back to safety before investigating. Hardmode is a persistent world progression change rather than a temporary difficulty setting.

  1. 01Defeat the Wall of Flesh to enter Hardmode.
  2. 02Use a hammer powerful enough to break an altar.
  3. 03Read the in-game message identifying the generated ore.
  4. 04Search suitable underground layers with upgraded mining equipment.

Understand the three early ore tiers

The first destroyed altar produces one of two alternate ores in the first tier: Cobalt or Palladium. The next establishes Mythril or Orichalcum, and the third establishes Adamantite or Titanium. You do not receive both alternatives in a normal world merely by breaking additional altars.

Later altar cycles add more ore of the already selected tiers rather than unlocking a fourth early tier. Some special world seeds behave differently, so identify your world type before using a rigid checklist taken from another player.

Find what your world actually generated

These ore deposits appear underground rather than immediately next to the altar you smashed. Use existing cave routes, lighting and tools that help you notice ore blocks while avoiding needless exposure to stronger enemies. If you cannot mine a new tier, check the pickaxe or drill requirements for that specific ore.

Do not assume your world is broken because an online guide says “find Cobalt” while your world reports Palladium. The alternate name is expected. Fishing crates and other acquisition routes may also matter, but those should be checked against your edition and current game mechanics.

What to do if breaking more altars does not help

Repeated altar destruction has diminishing returns and does not guarantee a convenient ore vein close to your base. Before breaking more, search at suitable depths and verify that the correct ore messages appeared. A missed notification can make the world feel stuck even when ore already exists.

For version-specific exceptions and special seeds, follow the current Official Terraria Wiki. Keep the distinction between the three early altar ore tiers, later ores such as Chlorophyte, and unique resources obtained from bosses.
