Overview
Play resilient, mobile melee without mistaking melee for permanent close quarters.
How it works
Melee damage includes many weapon styles, and later swords often create projectiles that extend practical range. Armor and accessory synergy vary with progression.
How to use it
Use knockback and mobility early, then invest in appropriate armor, weapon upgrades and specialized damage accessories.
Mistakes to avoid
Do not chase a giant sword before solving movement problems.
Melee Class Gear and Combat: detailed guide
How melee actually works
Melee damage is a game damage type, not an enforced class lock. Weapon speed, attack arc, projectile behavior and immunity frames determine practical use. Early swords are dangerous against flying targets if they lack reach; spears, flails or projectile swords can offer different attack patterns.
Arena decisions
Horizontal lanes help when a boss rushes, while layered platforms give escape from projectiles and minions. Do not stand underneath enemies hoping armor will remove the need to dodge. A grappling hook and running boots often improve survivability more than one extra armor point.
Progress toward late-game gear
Move from early found or crafted weapons to biome swords, Night’s Edge, Hardmode upgrades and eventually the Terra Blade or specialized boss weapons. Keep unusual swords for long crafting chains. The final Zenith is a collection project and should not distort early upgrade decisions.
What to test on each boss
Test whether your preferred weapon can hit consistently while moving. If the boss remains above you, choose a melee option with reach or a projectile. If mobs overwhelm you, favor sweep and knockback. If you run out of arena, improve movement before retrying.
