Build a team that can survive exploration, solve problems and manage several kinds of fights.
Understand the mechanic
Companions have different class abilities, strengths and story interactions. Rather than searching for a single mandatory team, consider coverage: front-line defense, ranged pressure, utility magic, healing or control.
Put it into practice
Review your party after a difficult encounter. If everyone depends on melee range, add an option for distant threats; if the party has no reliable exploration skills, think about who can handle locks and perception checks. Dialogue preferences also matter.

Common mistake to avoid
There is no universal best party for every difficulty, roleplay choice or encounter. A playable composition that fits your approach is preferable to a copied list you do not understand.
