How it works
Five-part, original Volpedia guide to complete beginner walkthrough, explaining the actual Baldur’s Gate 3 mechanics, common decision points and ways to avoid unnecessary mistakes.
Practical strategy
Follow the chapters in order, then open the related entries when a game rule or location is unfamiliar.
Mistakes to avoid
Do not confuse a suggested route with the only valid story outcome. Check quest warnings before irreversible decisions.
Complete Beginner Walkthrough: walkthrough
Build a manageable party
On the Nautiloid, first learn how to move, jump, inspect targets and access the hotbar. Escaping remains the mission; Commander Zhalk is optional. After landing, search the Ravaged Beach carefully for recruitable allies so the first difficult fights are not taken alone.
Nautiloid to Emerald Grove
At the Emerald Grove speak with both refugees and druids before choosing who to support. Several quests share these NPCs, and resolving the conflict too early can make optional scenes unavailable. Begin exploring the Blighted Village, nearby wilderness and the Goblin Camp at a pace your party can survive.
Actions, bonus actions and rests
Each turn offers a main action, a bonus action, movement and possibly a reaction. Plan them together: a character that casts Healing Word can still have an action; a Rogue can use Cunning Action to reposition. Short rests restore some class resources, whereas Long Rest restores spell slots and advances certain camp conversations.
Act I routes without lockouts
The Underdark and Mountain Pass are distinct exploration routes with important quests. Before entering new chapter areas, check your journal, complete the grove conflict as intended and revisit camp for dialogue. Do not interpret a travel warning as a cosmetic pop-up.
Your first sustainable build
Choose one reliable primary ability for each class. A frontline Fighter or Paladin, healer/controller Cleric, crowd-control Wizard and mobile Rogue is one accessible structure; companions may be respecced through Withers. Evaluate accuracy, initiative, utility and mobility as seriously as raw damage.
