Go further: Survival Walkthrough
Day one: secure the essentials
Break a few logs and turn the wood into planks, a crafting table and sticks. Make a wooden pickaxe, collect stone and upgrade tools. Find food nearby, collect fuel and prepare a furnace for cooked food or charcoal. Aim to establish a bed if sheep or the necessary wool are accessible; otherwise build a well-lit shelter. Avoid venturing into an unknown cave immediately before dark because you have not yet developed a reliable escape or respawn plan.
Early game: iron and a reliable home
Collect enough iron for a pickaxe, shield, water bucket and basic protection. Light a safe approach to your mine and organize materials in labeled storage. A little irrigated crop farm or animal pen saves repeated food-hunting trips. Carry blocks for emergencies and record your home coordinates; mining without a route home makes valuable finds harder to use. When you find diamonds, think about the next goal before crafting items at random.
Midgame: the Nether and stronghold
Prepare a diamond pickaxe and build an obsidian portal, then secure the Nether-side entrance before exploration. Wear a gold armor piece when appropriate around piglins, but do not assume that removes every Nether danger. Find a fortress for blaze rods and acquire Ender pearls by suitable means. Craft Eyes of Ender, bring spares and follow them in the Overworld to a stronghold. Search its rooms safely before filling the End portal frame.
Late game: dragon and the open sandbox
Before activating the portal, repair important gear, prepare food, a bow and supplies to reduce fall damage. In the End, deal with crystals that heal the dragon, fight from safe positions and mind the void. Afterwards, explore outer islands carefully for End cities and an elytra. You can now redirect your time to automated farms, megabases, exploration, restoration projects or multiplayer goals. Never carry all your irreplaceable gear on every outing.
