Start with a shield, not only a sword
An early melee upgrade is useful, but the shield can be more impactful when skeletons and several other threats are the immediate obstacle. Keep the shield in the offhand when appropriate and practice raising it before a projectile lands. Reserve iron for a pickaxe, bucket and other important tools; investing every ingot into a single weapon often delays the progression that would make you safer.
Melee weapon families
Swords are versatile close-range tools, while axes have special combat uses that differ across Java and Bedrock. The mace emphasizes powerful falling strikes that require careful positioning, and spears introduced with Mounts of Mayhem reward spacing and different attack timing. Decide whether you need a steady reliable weapon, a specialty attack or equipment suited to travel. Do not assume damage numbers and attack cooldowns are identical across editions.
Ranged equipment and consumables
Bows provide flexible ranged damage for the dragon, ghasts and open fights. Crossbows can be preloaded and have distinctive enchantment paths, and tridents introduce water-related or return mechanics when enchanted. Carry enough projectiles, repair important weapons and use cover instead of trading every hit. Keep food and appropriate healing or resistance options on hand when the environment demands them.
Armor and enchantment priorities
Armor is useful throughout progression, but material tiers are only part of the picture. Protection, durability, falling hazards, environmental effects and potion preparation change survival odds. Enchant expensive gear based on how it will be used: mining, underwater exploration, Nether travel or boss fights. Modern netherite upgrades need a template, so keep track of the entire crafting chain rather than only the ingots.
