Understand why an NPC cannot move into your base, how to use the housing query and how to plan spare rooms.
Ask the game whether the room is valid
Open the housing controls from the inventory and use the housing query on the intended room. Terraria can report missing walls, furniture or invalid boundaries. This is more dependable than copying a picture of a house that may differ from yours.
Housing also needs an appropriate structure with enough valid interior space, light and the required furnishing categories. A torch, work bench and chair are simple starting points, but the housing test is the final check.
Work through the likely problems
A gap in an exterior wall, missing safe background walls or furniture outside the room can invalidate a build that visually looks finished. Check entrances, background walls and the usable standing area rather than changing everything at once.
If Terraria says the room is suitable but the NPC still has not moved in, check whether the NPC itself has met the arrival conditions and whether it is already assigned elsewhere.
- 01Query the specific room in the housing menu.
- 02Fix the first missing requirement reported.
- 03Repeat the query until it says the room is suitable.
- 04Reserve an empty valid room for a future NPC.
Build towns, not only a giant apartment
Once you have several NPCs, spreading homes between biomes can help with happiness and Pylon travel. Housing is therefore both a progression system and a map-planning decision.
Keep spare housing near places where you often explore. A small network of towns can make shopping and travel easier than returning to one central settlement.
Do not confuse housing with a player spawn point
NPC housing and a player bed spawn are different checks. A bed may work for your own respawn while the room still fails NPC housing requirements.
When an NPC disappears temporarily after danger, do not assume the whole house has broken: verify the housing menu and wait for eligible respawn conditions.
