Troubleshoot houses that NPCs refuse to occupy by checking the housing query and each fundamental requirement.
Use the housing query tool first
Terraria evaluates NPC housing through several requirements, including a sufficiently enclosed room, suitable background walls, light and essential furniture. The housing interface can report whether a selected room qualifies. Use that feedback rather than guessing only from its appearance.
A large decorated building can still fail if it has a gap or an unsuitable section. A tiny room can also fail even if the player can stand inside. The game cares about valid housing rules, not architectural realism.
| House element | Question to test |
|---|---|
| Enclosure | Are edges and background walls suitable? |
| Furniture | Does this room satisfy comfort and surface rules? |
| Safety | Is the room in an unsuitable biome or blocked? |
Repair one condition at a time
Confirm the room is enclosed and supported by appropriate placed walls. Add a valid light source, a suitable flat-surface item and comfort furniture as needed. Make sure access and usable standing space are not blocked by decorations or platforms.
Run the housing check after each correction. If an area is affected by Corruption or Crimson, its suitability may change; moving NPCs or protecting a town can be necessary as progression continues.
- 01Check enclosure and background walls.
- 02Provide valid lighting and the necessary furniture.
- 03Run housing query again before building a second room.
Plan spare houses
Building a few extra valid rooms gives new NPCs somewhere to move after unlock conditions are met. It also gives you flexibility to relocate residents for Pylon use and happiness.
Mark each room clearly and avoid treating a bed as a complete housing solution on its own. The in-game query remains the authority when a construction guide conflicts with what your world accepts.
