Understand the difference between healing, regeneration and temporary buffs before using precious potion ingredients.
Recovery potions and buff potions do different jobs
Healing potions restore health but interact with the Potion Sickness cooldown. Temporary buff potions can improve attributes or conditions during an encounter, such as survivability, movement or a particular attack style. Consuming additional healing items cannot bypass normal use restrictions simply because you are carrying a larger stack.
Look at the tooltip rather than choosing a potion only by its name. Some buffs suit a weapon class or encounter far better than others. The official Terraria Wiki documents current effect descriptions and ingredients for each potion.
Build a small renewable supply
Organize materials for a handful of buffs you actually use. Keep bottles, herbs and other ingredients together so replacement attempts are not blocked by an unplanned gathering trip. Save rare components until the fight calls for their effect rather than applying every possible buff during routine exploration.
Decide which bonuses are most helpful for the boss. A player who repeatedly takes contact damage might benefit more from defenses and movement than from spending all resources on damage-oriented buffs. Food and world objects can contribute additional temporary benefits.
Use buffs at the right moment
Apply relevant buffs shortly before the encounter, then enter the fight with a clear inventory and healing slot. Check the remaining duration between attempts. Buffs can be lost on death, so one failed fight may require restocking even when you never consumed all the healing potions.
Do not rely on an old screenshot for exact effect strengths or timers; recent Terraria updates have changed potion behavior. Verify the version and item descriptions in the game or in the linked maintained wiki when making a detailed loadout.
