Understand dropped runes, recovery decisions and when it is smarter to explore elsewhere than force a risky retrieval.
What happens to unspent runes
When your character dies, carried runes are dropped at the death location. You can try to return and reclaim them, but dying again before successfully retrieving them causes the previous drop to be lost. This creates a risk decision, not a requirement to recover every drop no matter the danger.
Runes act as a resource for levels and other purchases. If you have accumulated a large amount, consider using them at an appropriate opportunity before entering an unfamiliar area rather than carrying them into an avoidable high-risk encounter.
Plan one safe recovery attempt
Before rushing toward the marker, look at the route from the nearest available Site of Grace. Identify enemies that can be avoided and areas where combat might trap you. If you can retrieve the runes without fighting a boss again, prioritize the recovery action and a safe retreat.
If reaching them requires repeating a difficult fight with no reliable escape, you may reasonably choose to abandon the runes and make progress elsewhere. Losing time repeatedly can cost more momentum than earning that amount again through normal exploration.
Reduce the risk of future losses
Spend runes when close to an upgrade or essential purchase, and experiment with new bosses after you have reduced the amount at stake. Mark escape routes and nearby resting places. Learn the attack pattern with a cautious first attempt rather than bringing a large unused reserve into a new arena.
Remember that Sites of Grace, Stakes of Marika and dungeon restrictions have distinct behavior. Check the actual available respawn choices and follow the official starter guide when an unfamiliar area changes your expected route.
