What is Relics and Boss Relic Tradeoffs?
A practical original guide to relics and boss relic tradeoffs, organized around actual Slay the Spire 1 decisions and the threats those decisions must solve.
This reference covers gameplay decisions in the original Slay the Spire. Character-specific options and relic synergy can change how useful an item is, so consider your current deck, health, upcoming enemy and available resources before applying a strategy.
When and how to use it
Start with the first section of this walkthrough, apply its sequence in a real run, then adapt the recommendation to the cards, relics and map you actually received.
What to avoid
Do not treat this as a predetermined perfect deck or guaranteed seed; enemy intents, card rewards, potion availability and path options change every run.
Step-by-step guide
Judge relics as run-specific systems
A relic is powerful because of the deck, future fights, and remaining floors, not because a tier list calls it universally strong. Shuriken and Kunai reward multiple attack plays, while Anchor makes early scaling turns safer. Track which triggers will realistically occur.
Understand energy relic constraints
Coffee Dripper removes resting, Fusion Hammer stops smithing, Sozu blocks future potion gains, and Ectoplasm blocks gold income. Each trade can be worth the energy, but only if you can survive the resulting limitations. A free energy symbol is never a free entire run.
Consider retention and randomness
Runic Pyramid lets you hold needed cards but may jam the hand with statuses and expensive cards. Snecko Eye changes card costs and favors expensive cards with extra draw. Neither is automatically correct in a tiny precision deck.
Route around relic strengths
Preserved Insect makes elite fights more attractive, Black Star improves elite reward density, and shop discounts matter when future merchant visits remain. Align route decisions with what the relic enables without exaggerating its effect.
Choose one boss reward over another
After bosses, look at your actual energy, defense, potion stock and scaling. A powerful new relic that removes your only source of healing may be worse than an ordinary option that keeps the deck consistent. Record the tradeoff and see whether the next act validates it.
