What is Defect Orbs and Focus Guide?
A practical original guide to defect orbs and focus guide, organized around actual Slay the Spire 1 decisions and the threats those decisions must solve.
This reference covers gameplay decisions in the original Slay the Spire. Character-specific options and relic synergy can change how useful an item is, so consider your current deck, health, upcoming enemy and available resources before applying a strategy.
When and how to use it
Start with the first section of this walkthrough, apply its sequence in a real run, then adapt the recommendation to the cards, relics and map you actually received.
What to avoid
Do not treat this as a predetermined perfect deck or guaranteed seed; enemy intents, card rewards, potion availability and path options change every run.
Step-by-step guide
Understand orb slots
Defect starts with Lightning from Cracked Core. Orbs provide recurring passive effects and stronger Evoke effects when moved out of slots. Position matters: channeling a new orb when full removes the front orb. Evoking Frost for a burst of Block is sometimes correct but can weaken future defenses.
Build Frost and Focus defense
Cold Snap, Coolheaded and Glacier provide Frost while contributing other effects. Defragment and other Focus sources improve orb effects. Additional slots allow multiple Frost orbs to accumulate. If the deck is all defense, identify a deliberate way to finish bosses through Lightning, Dark or strong attacks.
Channel Lightning and handle groups
Ball Lightning gives immediate attack pressure; Electrodynamics changes Lightning into powerful group damage. This is valuable in Act II where several foes attack together. Keep Block and control tools rather than building only around passive damage and ignoring enemy multi-hits.
Dark orb burst and precise evokes
Dark orbs gain strength across turns but must be placed and evoked carefully. Dualcast can become a finisher if the front orb has enough stored power. Extra slots can delay the critical Evoke; sometimes the better turn is to cycle orbs deliberately instead of expanding capacity.
High-energy late game
Echo Form doubles an important card each turn; Seek provides access to a chosen answer, and Meteor Strike can work in energy-heavy decks. Biased Cognition is a major tempo tool but can be problematic in long battles without a way to protect its Focus. Against Awakened One, do not play every Power without considering the boss response.
